The image selected by SBCF members was taken by Aude Nommick, a post-doctoral researcher in Nicolas Minc’s team.

This confocal microscopy image shows a Parancentrotus lividus sea urchin embryo at blastula stage. Most cells are in the process of cell division. Cyan shows the cell cortex (actin), red all the microtubules forming the mitotic spindles (tubulin) and green the DNA (Hoescht marking).

After the selection by the SBCF council, followed by the vote by SBCF members, the general public from all over France had the chance to express their preference during the “Fête de la Science” events held throughout October.

The most popular image with the general public was that of Sandra Carvalho, PhD student in the team of Antoine Guichet.

This image shows a dorsal view of an embryo of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster at stage 14 of embryonic development. The red and blue labelling reveal different networks of the actin cytoskeleton. The green labelling corresponds to cell-cell adhesion domains.
