Student reception and teaching
Around fifty students from various doctoral schools and of all nationalities are currently preparing a doctoral thesis at the Institut Jacques-Monod. The care we take in welcoming them and applying the thesis charter ensures that their thesis years run smoothly. An individual thesis committee, involving an expert from outside the IJM and an internal tutor, is organized each year to monitor doctoral work, regardless of the doctoral school to which the student belongs. At the IJM, Antoine Guichet (antoine.guichet@ijm.fr) and Benoit Palancade (benoit.palancade@ijm.fr) are responsible for monitoring and organizing thesis committees.
Every year, the Institut Jacques-Monod welcomes around 45 thesis students from several doctoral schools at different universities.

Apprentice Researcher Program
Apprentice Researchers at the Institut Jacques Monod
Since 2012, the Institut Jacques Monod has been hosting Apprentice Researchers as part of an initiative launched by the L’Arbre des Connaissances association: one Wednesday afternoon a month, middle and high school students from our neighborhood work with a research team to learn about scientific questioning and approaches, and carry out experiments on a laboratory research topic. Apprentice researchers work in pairs as part of an Institute team and are supervised by PhD students, teachers, researchers or technicians on a voluntary basis. The year ends with a mini-congress.
Interested students are selected from local schools on the basis of a letter of motivation, without any “academic” criteria.
The objectives of the Apprentis Chercheurs scheme :
raise awareness of scientific culture among middle and high school students, through a hands-on approach to the sciences, with a view to promoting social diversity;
introduce them to critical thinking on current scientific issues;
introduce them to careers and the world of research.
At the end of the school year, the Apprentice Researchers present their work in public at a mini-congress, and receive a research initiation diploma from the directors of the host institutes.
In turn, the Apprentice Researchers pass on what they have learned in the classroom and in their families, becoming ambassadors for research.
